Cognitive Development Skills Of A 9 Year Old Boy Essay

A Statement of Purpose The purpose of this observation is to study the cognitive development skills of a 9-year old boy. Also, to understand if there are any environmental factors that might affect any area of cognitive development: for example, memory capacity compared to an average child in middle childhood. The specific area that this observation will be concentrating on, is information processing, and to go more in depth, memory and attention. Background Information From early childhood to middle childhood, the child develops in many ways, such as, physical, cognitive, and social. The older the child gets, they can jump higher, they can hold a conversation and understand emotions in complex ways, and they can think more abstractly. Cognitive development in middle childhood starts from six years old to eleven years old. Their information processing improves from early childhood: such as, attention, planning, strategic memory, and self-regulation [berk]. Attention in a middle childhood becomes more selective, flexible, and planful [berk]. First, in selective and flexibility, children improve as they move into middle childhood. Children can focus on tasks that are more complex, such as, paying attention to a direction and being able to complete it without getting confused with another distractor or objective. Tasks at this age can become more challenging [berk]. Second, planning also becomes a complex objective going into elementary school years.
